Philosophic Searchlight- Republican AND Wealth
As I compose this post I’m searching for a way to tie it all together without covering it all up in one big, terrible bias. The category is “Where Are My Followers of Christ?” How judgmental of me to judge the topic beforehand, with that past us, what I tried to do was try select four contemporary and significant speakers, within the last week, talking about the U.S. debt and/or taxes. In the interest of time, both yours and mine, I’ve specifically targeted shorter clips of speeches.
Regarding passage selection from the Book, I’m not a religious scholar by any means. I performed a quick search for passages regarding accumulation of worldly wealth and/or charity. The passages I’ve selected, I feel, represent my common understanding of the Bible’s tenets regarding the relation of rich to poor in the world.
I hold republicans mostly up to this searchlight because they are generally avowed Christians. I would expect, if righteousness exists in the world, Christians might speak from an understanding of what’s written in the Bible. The following clips are paired with Bible verses for your consideration.
"If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” (Matthew 19:21)
How does rhetoric in the video sync up with the Holy Spirit?
John Boehner (U.S. Speaker of the House of Representatives)
“No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.” (Luke 16:13)
Mitch McConnell (U.S. Senator)
“If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him?” (John 3:17)
Barack Obama (U.S. President)
“Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:7)
Eric Cantor (U.S. Representative)
