On Being Better than Average
There’s a scale out there and it’s set by the people that are average. Where ever you go, generally, there is already someone there doing something in an average fashion. We’re constantly presented with chances to out perform someone else.
I can sign my checks fastest.
Outperforming another person fits within a law of averages.
The law of averages plays out in the workplace constantly.
A manager’s responsibility is to assess performance evaluations. The more people managed corresponds rather nicely to a greater reliance on regular written evaluations. Given sets of criteria like technical skills, professionalism, and education a manager should first set goals with their employees. Given some established period of time a follow up then happens and the manager writes how well they think the employee did attaining their goal.
Attainment is commonly expressed as a percent equal to or less than 100%.
If the manager is deemed to be someone special, as they probably should be, then I offer this note of advice. If you are a manager and someone above the average, don’t mistake your understanding of the world for the only understanding of the world. Average people will perform in average ways because they're average. Is it right to rub their nose into the fact that they're average?
Where are my followers of Christ on this one?
