A Democracy Rant

We don't live in a democracy!  I only say it because many people don't seem to get that point.  It's a critical point when we address the question: 'Is this as good as it gets?'

Democracy means we all have a say in what takes place in the world.

If you must, we can limit this kind of activity to just 'citizens' but really we move toward greater inclusion of 'citizen' every generation in America.  We've got a black president.  Women can vote.  I imagine I'll live to see gay 'marriage' legalized.

Anyone can hire a staff of people to help them form an opinion.  Take the following case of 4th Term Senator Harry Reid.

He's been in the Senate of the United States of America since 1987.  He's given a budget to hire a staff of people to help him gather and understand the information necessary to make intelligent decisions about policy in the United States of America.

You can't convince me a random selection of American citizens (with these same benefits) couldn't do just as good a job of running the country as the people currently elected for the legislative branch of our Republic (as opposed to a democracy.)

The least U.S. Senators currently make is $174,000 a year with a killer pension plan.

I know a lot of people who would take that job for $60,000 a year and no retirement benefits.
