Chris Benoit- The Death of a Hero?

Chris Benoit died June 24th.

Chris Benoit killed his wife and kid then he killed himself.

This event messes me up a little bit.  I don't want to try to take anything away from the families immediately involved.  I'm nobody to Chris Benoit or anyone in his family.  In the long run, my life will proceed apace with virtually no impact from this whole situation.

I like to think sometimes that I have no heroes.  It generally comes in that time when someone asks and my knee jerk reaction is to decline the possibility that I might need a hero.  As if in someway I am above the need of such mental crutches.  We are here alone and we need to be self-sufficient.  That whole line of reasoning.

Chris Benoit was one of my heroes.

I've actively watched this guy wrestle for over ten years.  If you include archive footage I've watched at least 15 years of Chris Benoit wrestling.  He was one of the greatest.  There was a time when I would've said that either Eddie Guerrero or Chris Benoit were the greatest wrestler alive.

Now they are both past tense.

Chris Benoit's greatness resided in the fact that he was solid.  He was dependable.  He seemed to be a person passionate about respect and doing the job right.  He exemplified these qualities in an era of soundbites, glitz and post production.  He generally exemplified these qualities without saying a word.  He demonstrated and convinced by actions.  Unfortunately, his final actions reflect the mental state of a raving madman.

Chris Benoit is one of the greatest wrestlers to have ever stepped into the ring.  That is a fact.  Chris Benoit is also a murderer.  Chris Benoit lifted professional wrestling above the level of a cartoon by simply stepping between the ropes.  Chris Benoit committed indefensible acts.

Chris Benoit was my hero, but now he cannot be a hero.

For all of you who wouldn't give professional wrestling the time of day before this event: drop out!!!  Get the details out quickly and then let the issue lie.  The indefensible is easily assigned from a distance.  The horror of it all seems more impactful with each retelling.  It happened and now I'm left with a hero paradigm that might compare Hitler as a painter to Benoit as a wrestler.

The man could flat out wrestle, but he's no longer able to be a hero.

For the sake of those like me, I hope the story is uncovered and moved past in short succession so we can individually decide how you mourn the loss of one more hero.
